Logic is sometimes mistaken for the art of winning arguments. In classical Christian education, it should be much more than that. Logic trains students to love truth enough to think carefully and to love neighbor enough to argue fairly.
A fair student learns to state another person’s view accurately before responding. This habit alone can change the tone of a classroom discussion and, eventually, a household conversation.
Formal logic gives students tools for recognizing valid reasoning, false assumptions, and common fallacies. But the tools must be governed by virtue. A sharp mind without charity can become cruel.
The goal is not students who merely defeat opponents. The goal is students who can ask good questions, recognize error, receive correction, and speak truth with courage and humility.
