What Is a Tutorial Model?

The best of both worlds: home and school, working together.

March 20, 2026 Parenting & Family C. Saint Lewis

A tutorial model is a structured educational approach in which students attend classes at a school campus two or three days a week and complete the remaining coursework at home under parental guidance. It combines the accountability and community of traditional school with the flexibility and family involvement of homeschooling — and it's one of the fastest-growing models in classical Christian education.

How It Works

At Saints Classical Academy, our Lower School (K–5) meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and our Upper School (6th–12th) meets on Mondays and Wednesdays. All students may attend optional Friday enrichment. On campus days, students receive direct instruction from trained teachers in core subjects. On home days, parents follow detailed lesson plans provided by the school.

This rhythm means students get the best of both worlds. They benefit from expert instruction, peer interaction, and structured classroom learning — while also preserving the family's central role in education. Parents aren't outsourcing their child's formation; they're partnering with a school that shares their values.

Why Families Choose It

Families come to the tutorial model for many reasons:

  • Flexibility — Home days allow families to travel, pursue outside interests, or accommodate unique schedules.
  • Parental involvement — Parents remain closely connected to what their children are learning. They see the work, guide the practice, and shape the conversation at home.
  • Community — Unlike pure homeschooling, students build friendships, learn to navigate classroom dynamics, and experience the church-like community of a small school.
  • Affordability — Tutorial programs are typically less expensive than full-time private school, making classical Christian education accessible to more families.
  • Quality instruction — Subjects like Latin, logic, and Singapore Math benefit from specialized teachers who know the material deeply.

Is It Right for Your Family?

The tutorial model works best for families who want to stay actively involved in their children's education while gaining the support of professional teachers and a like-minded community. It requires commitment — parents must follow through on home days — but the reward is an education that is both academically rigorous and deeply personal.

If you've been weighing homeschool, co-op, and full-time school, the tutorial model may be the option you didn't know existed.
