That means eloquence needs wisdom. A student may speak smoothly and still speak foolishly. The rhetoric stage asks students to consider audience, truth, order, beauty, and moral responsibility.
Persuasion Has Moral Weight
Good rhetoric also begins with listening. Students must understand the question, the text, the opposing view, and the needs of their hearers. This makes rhetoric an act of love as well as skill.
Students Practice in Community
Classrooms give students a safe community for practice. Speeches, essays, discussions, debates, and oral exams all help students grow in clarity and courage. The aim is not performance for its own sake, but faithful speech.
