Students should memorize. They need Scripture, poetry, math facts, grammar, geography, history, Latin forms, and beautiful language stored in the mind. But memory alone can become thin if students never learn why knowledge is worth loving.
Wonder gives memory its atmosphere. A child who marvels at a star, a sentence, a theorem, or a courageous act is more likely to remember with gratitude.
Wonder also needs content. A vague sense of inspiration is not the same as knowledge. Students need names, dates, places, words, categories, and definitions so that their wonder can become understanding.
This is why classical education values the grammar stage. Young students are capable of receiving a rich storehouse of knowledge that later supports reasoning and expression.
A classical Christian curriculum should not choose between disciplined memory and living wonder. It should join them. Students recite, read, observe, discuss, sing, calculate, write, and ask questions because truth is both knowable and delightful.
