Logic Needs a Moral Aim

The logic stage is a wonderful season. Students begin noticing contradictions, asking sharper questions, and testing whether an answer actually follows from the evidence. In a classical school, we welcome that growth because reasoning is a gift from God.

But logic without humility can become mere cleverness. A student who learns to win arguments without learning to love truth has not yet received the full benefit of the trivium.

This is why classroom discussion must be governed by charity. Students can disagree, challenge, and refine one another, but they must do so as neighbors under the authority of truth.

Parents often see this season at home too. A logic-stage student may suddenly question everything from bedtime to theology. That can be tiring, but it is also an opportunity. Patient adults can help students ask better questions, define terms, and admit when they do not yet know enough.
