This Is Not an Either/Or
Online homeschool communities sometimes treat classical education and Charlotte Mason as rival philosophies. In reality, they share far more than they differ on, and at Saints Classical, we use both.
Charlotte Mason gives us the how - living books, narration, nature study, short focused lessons, habit formation. The classical trivium gives us the what and when - grammar stage, logic stage, rhetoric stage, Latin, formal logic, great books.
Where They Overlap
- Both reject textbook-driven, worksheet-heavy education
- Both emphasize forming whole persons, not just filling heads with facts
- Both value great literature and primary sources
- Both believe children deserve rich intellectual content, not dumbed-down material
- Both prioritize character formation alongside academics
Where They Differ
Latin and Logic
Classical education includes formal Latin instruction and standalone logic courses. Charlotte Mason did not emphasize these. At Saints, we add Latin (Wheelock's) and formal logic to the Charlotte Mason foundation.
Structure
The classical trivium provides a three-stage framework (grammar, logic, rhetoric) that explicitly matches curriculum to developmental stages. Charlotte Mason's approach is less prescriptive about stages but emphasizes age-appropriate content and methods.
Rhetoric
Classical education culminates in rhetoric - formal training in persuasive communication. Charlotte Mason emphasized narration and composition but did not have the same formal rhetoric tradition. Saints adds STOA speech and debate, persuasive essay writing, and the senior capstone project.
How Saints Combines Both
At Saints Classical, you do not have to choose:
- K-5: Heavily Charlotte Mason - living books, narration, nature study, habit formation, Singapore Math. The grammar stage of the trivium.
- 6th-8th: Charlotte Mason methods continue, with formal Latin and logic added. Narration develops into analytical discussion. The logic stage.
- 9th-12th: Great books seminars, rhetoric, advanced Latin, capstone project. Charlotte Mason's living books tradition meets classical rhetoric. The rhetoric stage.
If your family already uses Charlotte Mason at home, Saints is a natural fit. We extend what you are doing with the classical elements (Latin, logic, rhetoric) that are hard to do alone.

No. Charlotte Mason methods mature with the student. Upper school students still read living books and practice narration, but they also add Socratic discussion, formal logic, rhetoric, and Latin. The Charlotte Mason foundation deepens rather than disappears.
